About Casual Homesteader
Hi, I'm Ashley, the creator behind Casual Homesteader.
I started this blog to document our journey into backyard homesteading; learning how to grow food, raise chickens, cook from scratch, and build a simpler life for our family.
We may not have acres of land, but I believe you don't need a full farm to live a homesteading lifestyle. Sometimes it starts with a few plants, a couple chickens, and a willingness to learn along the way.
Our Backyard Homestead
Our little homestead includes backyard chickens, fruit trees, container gardening, and plenty of DIY projects. I love experimenting with growing food in small spaces and figuring out practical ways to make everyday life a little more self-sufficient.
Some of the things you'll find here include:
Raising backyard chickens
Gardening and growing fruit trees
Homestead cooking and recipes
DIY backyard projects
Lessons learned along the way
One of our first homestead adventures was starting a small flock of Production Red chickens. Originally I was looking for Golden Comets, but when the store didn't have them available an employee recommended Production Reds as a great alternative. I loved that they are known for their friendly temperament and excellent egg production, especially important when raising chickens around a young child.
Homesteading With a Toddler
Life on our homestead also includes my daughter, Callie. She loves spending time outside, visiting the chickens, and swinging in the backyard while we work in the garden.
A big part of this blog is sharing how homesteading can fit into family life even with a busy schedule and a toddler running around.
Why "Casual Homesteader"?
I chose the name Casual Homesteader because this journey isn't about perfection. It's about learning, experimenting, and doing what you can with the space and time you have.
Some days things grow beautifully, other days chickens dig up your plants or a project doesn't go quite as planned. However, that's part of the adventure.
Follow the Journey
If you're interested in backyard chickens, gardening, homestead cooking, or building a more self-sufficient lifestyle one step at a time, you're in the right place.
Thanks for being here and following along on our homesteading journey!
